Chinese adults are not eating enough vegetables as required to prevent chronic disease and cancer
Only half Chinese adults eat enough vegetable every day while 17 percent eat enough fruits, health experts said in a food and nutrition promotion campaign in Shanghai over the weekend, calling people’s awareness of eating enough vegetable and fruit to prevent chronic disease and cancer.
Launched by the Disease Control and Prevention Bureau of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, the campaign will be held in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu to teach the public about proper and nutrition of vegetable and fruit.
Adults should eat 300 to 500 grams of vegetable, which include at least three types and half should be dark color and 200 to 400 grams of fruits, which include at least two types, said Yang Yuexin from Chinese Nutrition Society.
“The Chinese people nutrition and chronic disease reported issued recently said Chinese are eating too much fat but not enough vegetable and fruit,” Yang said. “World Health Organization said 19 percent of gastrointestinal cancer, 31 percent of ischemic heart disease and 11 percent of stroke are related with an insufficient intake of vegetable and fruit.
“Parents should educate children about the importance of eating vegetable and fruit and help them build habit of eating vegetable and fruits,” Yang said. “Fruit snacks and small fruit with high nutrition quality like kiwi are attractive to children.”
