Chinese captive rescued
FORMER Darfuri rebels said yesterday they had rescued a Chinese worker who was kidnapped days ago in neighboring Chad and that he was in good health, a spokesman said.
"Our forces in North Darfur confronted an unknown group holding the Chinese hostage -- we managed to obtain his release and we are chasing the kidnappers," said Zanoun Suleiman, spokesman for the Sudan Liberation Army.
The Chinese hostage was taken from eastern Chad. Joint Sudanese-Chadian forces were chasing the kidnappers who had headed toward the long, porous Sudanese border.
The Chinese man was working for construction company CGCOC when he was taken by unidentified armed men, Xinhua news agency said.
Suleiman said the hostage was unharmed and they would be handing him over to the authorities.
The SLA signed a 2006 peace accord with Khartoum but other factions are still fighting the government in Darfur.
Criminals often abduct foreign workers for ransom in the remote triangle between Chad, Sudan and the Central African Republic.
They are usually held in Sudan's Darfur region, destabilized by seven years of conflict.
At least 22 foreign workers have been kidnapped in 10 incidents for ransom in Darfur since March 2009. All have been released safely.
The kidnappers are mostly young men from Arab tribes demanding money and promises of development for their areas from the government.
