Chinese fans recall singer's Shanghai concert
WHITNEY Houston's sudden death saddened the singer's Chinese fan nationwide.
One of the earliest American singers whose music was made available in the Chinese mainland in 1999, Houston exerted a major influence on music lovers here.
Many fans said they didn't have CD players when they first heard Houston sing but could only listen on the radio or on cassette.
"The very first cassette of English songs I have was an album of Whitney Houston's," one fan said on weibo.com. "I still remember my dad bought me that from a foreign book store."
Another fan said he couldn't believe it when he heard the news. "When Michael Jackson died, I was all wobbly, and now this..." he said. "Fans have been through too much in recent years."
Houston's only live appearance on the Chinese mainland was in Shanghai in 2004. Fans recalled how gorgeous she looked in a traditional black qipao.
"It was in summer and it was scorching," recalled a fan. "But Houston refused air-conditioning, being afraid that the cold breeze would harm her throat."
Kiki Yang, another fan who went to the concert, said that apart from Houston's beautiful voice and the atmosphere of the live show, she couldn't remember too much in detail.
"I'm not good at English," she said. "I only remember she embraced the air and said 'it's so hot!' to the audience. But I'll definitely miss her because it was the very first live show I had been to."
