Chinese firm says 4 dead, 126 hurt, in Vietnam riots
A CHINESE company said yesterday that four of its workers were killed last week in anti-China riots in Vietnam.
In a report filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the state-owned China Metallurgical Group Corp said 126 other workers were hurt, including 23 who were seriously injured, in the May 14 violence at Ha Tinh, where the company is contracted to build a steel plant for Taiwan-based Formosa Plastics Corp.
The Chinese company said most of its 3,565 employees in Ha Tinh — as well as hundreds of other Chinese working in Vietnam — were evacuated from the country afterward.
China sent four vessels on Sunday to evacuate Chinese workers. After 20 hours traveling, the Chinese arrived at Xiuying port in Haikou, in China’s southmost province of Hainan yesterday, Xinhua news agency reported.
