Chinese pair freed, fined for fighting on a plane
TWO Chinese men who fought on a flight from Zurich to Beijing and forced the plane with 200 people to turn back were freed on Monday local time. One of them was fined, Shanghai Evening Post reported today.
The elder of the two men, 57, was ordered to pay a daily fine for 90 days for endangering the safety of public transport, according to a Swiss prosecutor.
The prosecutor did not reveal the exact amount of the fine but claimed such a behavior had violated the criminal law of Switzerland.
The fight occurred on Monday when the Swissair Airbus 340 was flying over Moscow, about six hours after takeoff. The elder man hit a 27-year-old man sitting in his front for lowering the seat too far. They wrestled onto the cabin floor and even fought the head steward who tried to break them up, witnesses said.
The pilot decided to turn the plane around as he feared the fight would break out again even though the two had been separated by passengers and crew members, Mehdi Guenin, a spokesman for the airline, said, adding no one was injured in the incident.
The two Chinese were arrested by Zurich police after the plane landed. Swiss media said they were being questioned.
