Chinese police arrest bear paw traders

Police in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province have arrested seven suspected traders in endangered wild animal products, including bear paws, they announced on Friday.

In late July, forestry police from Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang, caught three members of the gang in neighboring Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, confiscating more than 100 kg of paws from brown bears, which are under official state protection.

More than 250 kg of other wild animal parts, such as deer antlers, were also among the seizures, according to the police.

Bear paws are deemed a delicacy in parts of China, while deer antlers are used in traditional Chinese medicine.

The other suspects were later caught in Qiqihar City and Jilin Province.

Traders in wild animal products can be jailed for up to 10 years in China.
