Chinese special envoy meets Malaysian PM

CHINESE special envoy Zhang Yesui met today with Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak for discussions over the matter of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

Zhang, a Chinese vice foreign minister, is also expected to confer with Malaysia's acting transport minister, Hishammuddin Hussein, as well as the top brass of the airline.

The senior diplomat traveled here after Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered in The Hague on Monday that a special envoy be sent to Kuala Lumpur to consult with Malaysian authorities, learn about the situation, and ask the Malaysian side to properly handle related issues.

Xi also ordered relevant Chinese agencies to help Malaysia and all other parties involved carry on the search operations and make proper arrangements for all aspects of the matter.

Also today, three Chinese warships and an icebreaker reached their target areas in the southern Indian Ocean to search for the ill-fated Boeing 777 aircraft, which disappeared early March 8 while carrying 239 people -- including 154 Chinese -- from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

A Chinese IL-76 aircraft and 11 other planes from Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Japan and South Korea are scheduled to carry out airborne search today.
