Chinese student's parents arrested

THE parents of a Chinese student studying in the United States have been arrested for trying to get a woman who claimed their son had sexually assaulted her to change her story, China News Service reported yesterday.

Tang Peng, 21, was arrested on charges of kidnapping and sexually assaulting the woman on March 29 in the bedroom of the Iowa City apartment that she was trying to sublet. The charges carry a mandatory life sentence.

Tang's parents, Tang Xuefan, 57, and Qiao Li, 49, who arrived in Iowa City on April 5, are said to have asked an unidentified person who is close to their son to find the alleged victim and persuade her to change her story, Iowa City police said.

The woman notified the police when she heard what the parents were planning, according to the Press-Citizen, a local newspaper.

The couple were arrested last Wednesday and charged with witness tampering. If convicted, they could face up to 10 years in prison.

Tang and his parents are being held in the city's Johnson County Jail. Tang pleaded not guilty last Friday and a trial date has yet to be set.

Asked to see bedroom

Police said the woman posted her apartment on a subleasing website and Tang contacted her to make an appointment to view on March 29.

After arriving at the apartment, Tang asked to see the bedroom, but then, it is alleged, grabbed the woman's hands and tried to handcuff her. He forced her at knifepoint to turn off her cellphone and put a towel in her mouth, police said.

Tang then sexually assaulted the woman, police said, threatening her when she refused to do what he wanted.

Police said Tang also forced the woman to pose for nude photographs and said he would post them online if she went to the police.

Tang was arrested the next day when the woman arranged to meet him at her apartment, where police were waiting.

Tang told them he was there to see a friend. Asked for the friend's name, he gave the alleged victim's last name, police said.

According to the newspaper report, police found handcuffs and a key, more than 10 pairs of women's underwear, four bras, two bra straps, a knife, condoms and Viagra pills at Tang's apartment.
