Chinese tour groups are safe
CHINA'S National Tourism Administration said yesterday that 215 Chinese tour groups in Japan have been confirmed safe after an 8.9-magnitude earthquake devastated the country's eastern coast on Friday.
A total of 4,578 Chinese tourists were in Japan at the time of the quake. As of noon yesterday there were no deaths or injuries reported among them, the NTA said.
It has activated an emergency response system and issued a travel alert for Japan and countries along the Pacific Rim, the administration said on its website.
The NTA has also called for travel agencies to protect Chinese tourists in Japan and keep in touch with the Chinese embassy and consulates there, as well as China's tourism authorities.
Chinese tour agencies have started to bring back tourists from Japan while also canceling trips.
China CYTS Tours promised a full refund for trip cancellations and offered to bear the costs to protect tourists in areas hit by a natural disaster.
