Chinese tourists spend US$160b
CHINESE tourists spent more than 1 trillion yuan (US$160 billion) overseas last year.
“The number of outbound travelers exceeded 100 million and their spending surpassed 1 trillion yuan,” said Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng.
Some people travel abroad to buy products that are more expensive in China due to high tax rates or brands’ pricing strategies, Gao said.
“It is up to Chinese people themselves to make their consumption choices overseas, while an increasing number of Chinese people’s consumption choices at home are diversified,” said Gao.
Chinese tourists’ consumption overseas is expected to gradually shift from emulative spending to a “normal condition,” he said.
