Chinese trawler crew seized by Japan back home

A chartered plane of the Chinese government carrying 14 Chinese fishermen illegally seized by Japan landed in China's southeast port city of Fuzhou this afternoon after China's repeated solemn representations.

The fishermen were illegally detained after the trawler they were aboard collided with two Japanese Coast Guard patrol vessels near the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea last Tuesday.

The fishing boat, which was "illegally detained by the Japanese side", also set off for home this morning and the Chinese government has sent a fishery administration ship to relevant waters for assistance, said the Chinese Foreign Ministry in a statement.

China has repeatedly lodged solemn representations to the Japanese side over the incident, and all the Chinese people, including overseas Chinese, have denounced the illegal actions of the Japanese side, which fully demonstrated the firm will and determination of the Chinese government and people to safeguard the country's territory and sovereignty, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said today.

Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture and the local government of Fujian Province were on the chartered flight to take care of the fishermen, she said.

The captain of the Chinese fishing boat, Zhan Qixiong, 41, was still held by the Japanese authority for allegedly "obstructing public duties", and a Japanese court has ruled him a 10-day detention through September 19.

"The captain was still illegally detained by the Japanese side and China strongly demands the Japanese side to immediately let him return," Jiang said.
