Chinese universities make the top 10 list

TWO Chinese academic institutions, University of Hong Kong and University of Macau, squeezed into the top 10 of the world’s most international centers of higher learning in 2016, according to a new list published yesterday by Times Higher Education.

The latest list ranked University of Hong Kong in third place and University of Macau in sixth.

The UK publication’s World’s Most International Universities Ranking 2016 included 200 universities from 28 countries. It employed indicators such as the proportion of international staff, the number of international students, and the volume of research papers published with at least one co-author from another country.

Qatar University was named the most international institution, marking the first time a Middle Eastern university has topped the list.

The others in the top 10 were University of Luxembourg (second), Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (fourth), University of Geneva (fifth), ETH Zurich — Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (seventh), University of St Gallen (eighth), National University of Singapore (ninth) and Imperial College London (10th).

London gets top marks

The survey also revealed that London enjoyed the largest number of international universities, with 15 on the top 200 list, including six in the top 30 — Imperial College London, University College London (18th), King’s College London (20th), London School of Economics and Political Science (22nd), Queen Mary University of London (23rd), and Royal Holloway, University of London (30th).

“An institution’s global outlook is one of the key markers of a prestigious university. The top institutions hire faculty from all over the world, attract students from a global market of top talent and collaborate with leading departments wherever they happen to be based.” said Phil Baty, editor of Times Higher Education World University Rankings. “All institutions in this list deserve to celebrate — being named one of the most international universities in the world is a sign of great potential, competitiveness and dynamism.”
