Chinese vessels at Diaoyu for third day

FOUR Chinese marine surveillance ships sailed into the territorial waters of the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea yesterday to carry out normal activities to safeguard China's sovereignty over the islands.

The maritime surveillance vessels entered the 12-nautical-mile zone around the main islet in the Diaoyu chain at about noon. The four ships left the zone at about 3pm and remained within 24-nautical-mile "contiguous" waters off the islet.

Chinese vessels have moved in and out of the waters over the past two months since the Japanese government illegally bought the islands from a so-called private owner.

It was the third consecutive day that Chinese vessels have entered the territorial waters of the islets.

On Friday, six Chinese marine surveillance ships entered the territorial waters around the same islet, while on Saturday, one Chinese surveillance ship entered the same area.
