Chinese woman saves 100 animals from slaughter
A Chinese woman has paid over US$1,000 to save 100 dogs from being eaten during the Yulin festival.
Yang Xiaoyun paid around 7,000 yuan (US$1,100) to save the dogs according to a report on web portal Netease yesterday.
The city’s annual festival devoted to the slaughter and eating of dogs has provoked an increasing backlash from animal protection activists and ordinary members of the public.
Yang, 65, plans to rehouse the dogs from her home nearly 2,000 kilometers away in the northern city of Tianjin.
Around 30 million households on China’s mainland are estimated to keep dogs as pets, a trend that is helping to fuel a growing movement concerned about the rights of animal.
