Chinese women 'duped by African drugs pair'

TWO Africans have been detained in Shanghai for allegedly using young Chinese women to receive drugs for them, according to CCTV's Channel 12.

Its report cited police as saying the men used the girls to collect packages from overseas which, unknown to the women, contained drugs such as cocaine and marijuana.

A number of women in different parts of the country are said to have been involved in the case and police are still pursuing other suspects.

In August, police in Shanghai were alerted to three suspicious parcels sent from South America and addressed to the same woman, identified as Ling.

Police approached Ling when the third parcel was delivered and asked her to open it. It turned out to contain stethoscopes, but police found drugs concealed in the layers of the cases.

Ling was horrified and told police the parcels belonged to her friend, an African identified as Frank. She got to know him through a learning English website and kept up a relationship with him for over a year.

She said Frank claimed to be a businessman from Cuba involved in international trade in China. He told her he didn't have an apartment in Shanghai as he had just moved to Hong Kong, so he asked Ling if she could receive parcels of samples from overseas.

Bags of cocaine

Police asked Ling to arrange a meeting with Frank at her complex and detained the 30-year-old Ghanaian when he turned up. Police later found small bags of cocaine after searching his belongings, the TV report said.

While Frank was being detained, his cell phone kept ringing and it turned out to be another girlfriend.

Police questioned her and that led to an address on Changshou Road in Putuo District and the discovery of another alleged drug trafficker, an African identified as Louis.

Police found cocaine and marijuana at the address. They also uncovered a computer containing pictures of young Chinese girls, mainly from Shanghai and Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.

Below each photo, the names, jobs, addresses and other information about the women were listed.

Several days later, police raided another residence in Wenzhou City in Zhejiang Province and seized an unknown quantity of drugs, according to the TV report.

Police said some of the young women involved had raised doubts about what was in the parcels and demanded they be opened, only to find normal items and no obvious sign of drugs.

According to police, the women would be considered victims, not accomplices, of the drug suspects.
