Chinese worker feared abducted by Sudanese

A CHINESE worker has gone missing in an oil-field neighboring the restive western Sudanese region of Darfur and southern Sudan, a well-informed Chinese source in Khartoum said yesterday.

The man, working for an oil company in the Fula region of South Kordofan State, went missing on Friday morning during work time, the source said, adding that local authorities were searching for him.

Meanwhile, Khartoum's al-Sahafa daily reported that an unidentified group on Friday abducted a Chinese worker working for an oil company in South Kordofan State.

"An unidentified group abducted a Chinese worker and led him to an unknown area. Security authorities are continuing their contacts to specify the location of the abductors," the paper quoted Ismail Bushara, a local official in Kordofan, as saying.

He added that until late on Friday they had not been able to identify the abductors.

The paper further quoted government sources as saying that the region had recently witnessed forceful activities by an obscure tribal group called the "Haiban Youth Mechanism," which wants local development projects in the area and demands that oil companies operating in the region employ members of its tribe.
