A CHINESE worker was kidnapped in Chad and joint Sudanese-Chadian forces were searching for him along the border, the Sudanese army and a Chinese diplomat said yesterday.
Criminals along the long and porous border kidnap foreign workers for ransom in the remote triangle between Chad, Sudan and Central African Republic. The captives usually are held in the war-torn Sudanese Darfur region.
"We have information that he was kidnapped in Chad," Sudan's army spokesman al-Sawarmi Khaled said. "We are waiting for the results of the search to determine exactly where he is."
Khaled did not immediately have details of which company employed the Chinese man.
Citing China's ambassador to Chad, Xinhua news agency reported that a worker from the Chinese construction company CGCOC was kidnapped two or three days before September 8 while on his way to a construction site in Iriba, in northern Chad.
A Chinese diplomat in N'Djamena confirmed the kidnapping and said the army had attempted to rescue him, but gave no further details.
Kidnapping has become a big business in Darfur, with at least 10 abductions of foreign workers for ransom since March 2009. All have been released safely.
The kidnappers are mostly young men from Arab tribes demanding money and development for their areas from the government.
