Chinese-American investor and popular blogger detained in prostitution sting

A WELL-KNOWN Chinese-American startup investor and prolific microblogger was detained for involvement in prostitution and also was suspected of group licentiousness, Beijing police said.

Xue Biqun, better known by his online name Xue Manzi, was found to have paid for sex with at least 10 women since mid-May, police said. Prostitutes confirmed Xue was a frequent client and said he liked to have several women with whom to engage in sex at one time, authorities said.

Xue is the co-founder of the telecom firm UT Starcom. He also has more than 12 million followers on Weibo, where technology is one of his favorite topics.

The 60-year-old said he was addicted to group sex after he got into the habit during his overseas stay, Xinhua news agency reported today.

The United States Embassy in China sent officials to pay a visit on Tuesday, four days after he was caught paying for sex with a 22-year-old prostitute surnamed Zhang in her temporary residence in the capital’s Chaoyang District.

As an American citizen, Xue can also be deported, law professor Hong Daode told China National Radio.

Xue was among nine men and 18 women nabbed in the latter part of this month in the community after police received tips about prostitution.

Police said Xue was “very arrogant” when he was caught. He said he was an American and told police to inform his lawyer, police said.

He confessed that a 32-year-old woman surnamed Liang introduced Zhang to him in early August, and he paid for sex with Zhang three times in the community, police said. Zhang earned a total of 3,500 yuan (US$571.90), according to officials.
