Chongqing mob boss, top aide executed
A CONVICTED mob master and his right-hand man were executed yesterday in Chongqing Municipality for leading a gang that controlled the city for eight years.
Yang Tianqing, 35, was sentenced to death for murder, intentional injury, and illegal possession of guns and ammunition in Chongqing No.1 Intermediate People's Court last year.
The court found Liu Chenghu guilty of murder, assault and battery, counterfeiting identification cards, illegal confinement and taking part in a crime gang.
The Supreme People's Court approved the death penalties yesterday. Yang was also fined 500,000 yuan (US$73,200).
Yang's sophisticated crime ring came to light after he was condemned for a daylight slaying in June.
A nightclub boss surnamed Liang was pulled out of his car and sliced 17 times by a group of armed men on a downtown road. The police investigation linking Yang to the case opened Chongqing's massive crackdown on criminal rings.
In previous media reports, Yang was described as the fiercest mob master in Chongqing. A man surnamed Lei had his leg slashed because he had lunch with Yang's wife and made him jealous.
Yang recruited only ex-convicts in his gang since 2005 to carry out murder, assault and battery, extortion and usury. He used the threat of violence to force local businessmen to deal with them.
Two other gang members, Jian Shaokun and Zeng Chuan, were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, which means their penalty could be commuted to life imprisonment on good behavior.
