Chongqing officials investigated for corruption

THE vice director of Chongqing Coal Mine Safety Inspection Bureau was arrested for corruption.

Several other government leaders in Chongqing's Wansheng District were also put under "Double Designation," Chengdu Business Daily reported today.

Vice bureau director Wang Xiping was put under "Double Designation" about a month ago and arrested recently, a bureau official said, without revealing Wang's alleged crimes.

"Double designation?" is a high-level investigation of officials for corruption.

Wang seized a coal mine with annual output of tens of millions of yuan by force, the newspaper learned from insiders. His case involves the misuse of about 30 million yuan (US$4.4 million), insiders said.

A 46-year-old Sichuan Province native, Wang graduated from the University of Mining & Technology. He started work with Songzao Coal & Electric Company in 1992 and was recruited into Chongqing Coal Mine Safety Inspection Bureau in 2000. Wang was appointed vice director in July 2007.
His former colleagues commented his arrest was no surprise, the report said.

Zhao Wei, director of the Administration of Work Safety in Wansheng District, is under "Double Designation" for discipline violations, while Xiong Yong, vice director of the district's land resources bureau, and Fang Jianhong, chairman of Chongqing Zhenxing Coal Industry (Group) Co Ltd, are also being investigated by prosecutors, according to the report.
