Chongqing police chief denies mass sackings

CHONGQING'S police chief denied today that all the city's grassroots police officials have been fired, saying their jobs were open in an ongoing re-recruitment program.

The re-recruitment starting this month is regularly held every six years, Wang Lijun, Chongqing Security Bureau director, today told China National Radio.

He said a supervising group will monitor cheating and nearly all officers taking part in the city's crackdown against criminal gangs will get preferential treatment.

The re-recruitment had sparked speculation that the sackings were linked to the city;s crackdown on mafia-like gangs. Many top police officials, including the city's former police chief Wen Qiang, were accused of protecting the gangs and taking part in criminal actions.

Wen, 55, is still waiting for a verdict after his trial last month on charges of taking millions in bribes to protect mafia-like gangs.
