Chow Yun-fat to give away earnings

HONG KONG actor Chow Yun-fat has pledged to donate 99 percent of his wealth to charity upon his death.

The 55-year-old movie star said he is not taking anything with him when he dies and has already reached agreement with his wife Jasmine Tan, reported yesterday's Shanghai Morning Post.

The couple has started discussing donation details with their lawyer, the newspaper said.

Chow is estimated to be worth some 500 million yuan (US$74 million) but lives modestly.

He said he was inspired after playing in Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," when he was overpowered by natural beauty and began considering the meaning of life.

Chow started his career in Hong Kong films and became a household name in China for his leading role in "The Bund" in 1980.

He shot to fame in Hollywood for his performances in "The Corruptor," "Anna and the King" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."

Chow became the first entertainer to announce a decision to donate nearly all his money, following similar announcements by two Chinese mainland business leaders, Chen Guangbiao and Feng Jun.
