Chromium polluters in Yunnan get prison terms

SEVEN people who caused severe chromium pollution in southwestern China's Yunnan Province were sentenced to prison yesterday in the Qilin District People's Court.

Wu Xinghuai, Liu Xingshui and Wang Pingkun were sentenced to four years and fined 50,000 yuan (US$7,900) each for dumping more than 5,000 tons of carcinogenic industrial chemicals on hills near Chachong Reservoir between April and June 2011.

Rainfall in June washed chromium residues into water supplies in the city of Qujing, killing 77 cattle and polluting 40,000 cubic meters of water in a reservoir and another 3,000 cubic meters in a river.

Zuo Xianglin and Tang Zaiyang, managers of Luliang Chemical Industry Co, didn't get approval to transfer hazardous wastes and entrusted unqualified people - Wu, Liu and Wang - to dump the toxic wastes, the court said.

Zuo was sentenced to 3 1/2 years and fined 40,000 yuan while Tang got three years with a three-year reprieve and was fined 30,000 yuan.

Yuan Ke, deputy general manager at Sanli Fuel of the city of Xingyi in neighboring Guizhou Province, and Dai Muchang were sentenced to three years with four-year reprieves and fined 30,000 yuan each, the court said.

The court also confiscated Wang's and Yuan's ill-got money totaling 14,000 yuan.

Luliang has been fined 300,000 yuan for damaging the environment, and production there has been halted since last August. The chemical plant is one of Asia's largest producers of chromium sulfate.
