Cigarette lighter blamed as patient burns to death in hospital oxygen chamber
A 67-year-old man accidentally burned himself to death last month, apparently because he tried to light a cigarette during his treatment in a hospital’s hyperbaric oxygen chamber in southern China’s Guangdong Province, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.
The patient surnamed Liu was found lighting a cigarette lighter around 8:10am when the pressure of the hyperbaric oxygen chamber where he was being treated was being lifted on July 24, the report said.
Doctors exhausted the pressure and shut down the power immediately, but the chamber was on fire. Doctors dragged Liu out and reported the incident to police. Liu was declared dead at 2:30pm the next day.
