Cinema sued over ads

A MOVIE-GOER in northwest China is suing a cinema and the distributors of the box office hit "Aftershock," claiming excessive advertising wasted her time and violated her freedom of choice.

The suit, filed by lawyer Chen Xiaomei, has been accepted by the People's Court of Yanta District, Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province.

Chen, who saw the movie twice at the Xi'an Polybona International Cinema, said in the suit that audiences were given no indication on the ticket that there were 20 minutes of ads before the film began.

As they did not know how long the commercials would be, film-goers had to wait so as not to miss the movie, which wasted their time and violated their right to know and to choose, the suit says.

Chen is demanding the Polybona and Huayi Brothers Media Corporation, the film's distributors, refund her ticket price of 35 yuan (US$5.15), pay another 35 yuan in compensation and 1 yuan for emotional damages. She is also seeking a written apology.

She also wants the cinema to clearly state advertisement times, and that Huayi Brothers shorten the time for commercials to less than five minutes.

"Aftershock," about the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, has taken more than 650 million yuan at the Chinese mainland box office.
