Cities bag US$6m incentive
ALMOST 40 million yuan (US$6.2 million) in financial rewards were paid out in the first quarter of the year to city governments in east China’s Shandong Province in recognition of their efforts to improve air quality.
A total of 15 cities received a combined 39.4 million yuan from the provincial government for making year-on-year improvements in the January-March period.
The governments of Jining and Zaozhuang meanwhile were fined a combined 5.5 million yuan after air quality in those cities worsened.
The new scheme was introduced after the central government said that from this year it would include environmental protection as a criterion for assessing the performance of local officials.
