Citizen's Shenzhen workers are on strike

MORE than a thousand workers have been on strike since last Monday over low pay and reduced welfare benefits in their factory in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province which assembles watches for Citizen, a Japanese brand.

The 1,178 workers at the Japanese-funded Guanxing Precision Machinery Factory have not returned to work this week, the Dongfang Daily reported today.

A factory official said not every employee took part in the strike and a negotiation between the workers and the factory is ongoing.

The Bao'an District Human Resources and Social Security Bureau is now involved in the negotiation to help both sides reach a compromise, Xinhua News Agency said yesterday.

The workers complained that the factory has added 40 minutes per day to their working time since 2005 to compensate for the time spent in bathroom and for short breaks. They also said the factory didn't pay enough pension and housing fund for them.

The bureau said the factory has agreed to pay workers certain compensation, but the negotiation over the 40-minute extra working time is still ongoing, Xinhua said.
