City bids farewell to heroic bus driver
Tens of thousands of people in Hangzhou, capital of eastern Zhejiang Province bid farewell today to a bus driver who died after saving 24 passengers in a fatal accident.
Police motorcycles led the hearse carrying Wu Bin's body in a funeral procession that went around the West Lake before going to the Hangzhou Funeral Home, local media reported.
Local people stood on the roadsides holding banners that read "Hope you rest in peace" and police officers saluted to the motorcade. Sixty taxi drivers volunteered to escort the hearse.
Wu, 48, was hit by a broken piece of a drum brake while he was driving on a highway between Hangzhou and Wuxi, a city in Jiangsu Province last Tuesday. He struggled to park the bus on the roadside and turned on hazard lights, avoiding deadly crash.
Initial investigation showed a vehicle's drum brake broke loose due to metal fatigue and a fragment flew up and smashed the windshield of Wu' bus.
Police have identified 20 vehicles that passed the section when the accident occurred and are trying to pin down the suspect, a Hangzhou newspaper, Modern Express, said.
