City cuts heat supply to meet fuel target
SOME 1 million residents in Linzhou, central Henan Province braved chilly weather after the city shut down a central heating plant in an attempt to meet its energy-saving target.
Furious residents flooded the local government hotline with complaints after it announced on Saturday that the heating supply would be cut temporarily.
Affected schools, hospitals and government departments had to buy electric heaters, and local neighborhood communities distributed cash compensation to affected homes, Beijing News reported today.
A government worker surnamed Li said all state employees were ordered by their superiors not to lodge complaints to higher authorities.
The city was desperate to meet its energy-saving target required by the central government. Last year, it forced the local Youchuang Power Plant to run under capacity, causing frequent blackouts.
