City government says man's charge against mayor unfounded

A bureau official in Zhangjiajie City in central Hunan Province posted on the Internet that the city's mayor Zhao Xiaoming and his wife were both involved in public tenders for several key construction projects. However, the city government denied his allegations and said an earlier probe by the provincial authorities already proved the mayor was innocent.

Gong Houqin, the deputy director of Zhangjiajie Urban Management Bureau, posted his claim on a local website yesterday morning and left his real name and phone number, the Beijing News reported today.

Gong told the newspaper that he had reported the mayor's corruption to the Hunan Provincial Discipline Inspection Committee in May and an investigation ensued. But Gong said he was not satisfied with the investigation result and decided to expose the matter on the Internet.

Wang Lizhang, the secretary-general of Zhangjiajie Government, told the newspaper that the provincial disciplinary authorities sent a group to investigate Zhao's alleged misconduct and they found Gong's accusation groundless.

Other Zhangjiajie government officials said Gong bear a personal grudge against the mayor because Zhao criticized him openly last year. However, Gong denied that he had hatred for the mayor.
