City installing air purifiers in schools
AIR purifiers are to be installed in all schools and kindergartens in Zhengzhou, capital of central China’s Henan Province.
Installation will begin this summer, education authorities said, with the aim of having the majority of schools equipped with air purifiers by the end of the year.
Of the many Chinese provinces having been affected by winter smog, Henan is among the worst hit. Local authorities suspended classes on six occasions last year due to heavy air pollution.
One parent, surnamed Li, who welcomed the news, said she had to take leave or pay for her son to attend a cram school when the city government issued red alerts for air quality.
“There had been talk between myself and other parents of raising money to buy the school an air purifier, but now it’s all solved,” she said.
Zhengzhou is the latest city to begin installing air purification systems in schools.
Beijing urged districts to install purification systems and Tianjin began to fit all its kindergartens, primary and secondary schools with air filters this year.
