City jobs lift public concerns over waste
OFFICIALS in a north China city rebuffed reporters' inquiries after the appointment of 89 new bureau heads, way above average.
Handan City government in Hebei Province refused to quell public doubt over the appointments made on February 2, saying the reasons were confidential and inquiries were messing up work schedules, Xiaoxiang Morning Post reported yesterday.
Many Internet users said the new appointments were a waste of taxpayers' money.
Some said the city had turned into "a supermarket of official posts."
Included in the 89 posts were 11 deputy directors for human resources, nine for urban management and eight for industry and information.
An official surnamed Zhang with Handan Party's organization department told Henan Youth Daily that the appointments were inhouse rather than mass hirings.
