City living can make you feel lonely
THE pressures of city life have made more than 90 percent of people in a survey feel lonely while nearly half of respondents said they were not happy with their lives.
The survey, by Tsinghua University and the Ministry of Education, covered 69,000 residents in cities including Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen.
The leading pressure was the rising cost of living, with most respondents not able to afford their mortgage and education fees, the Shanghai Morning Post reported.
The second was office anxiety with some citing difficult co-workers and delayed promotions.
"While the mobile phone and Internet bring more communication convenience to us, we are mentally separated from each other and feeling more pressure and anxiety," said Peng Kaiping, dean of the department of psychology of Tsinghua University.
