City ranks 37th as competitor
NEW York topped a list for urban competitiveness while Shanghai ranked 37th worldwide, according to a survey jointly issued by Sino-US scholars yesterday in Beijing.
The annual Global Urban Competitiveness Report ranks more than 500 cities, based on such indicators as the use of green gross domestic product, economic growth, the number of patent applications and multinational company index.
China has 69 cities on the survey, mostly between 200th to 400th.
But eight Chinese cities - Ordos, Hohhot, Guiyang, Haikou, Weifang, Yangzhou, Nanjing and Xining - occupied places in the top 10 fastest growing cities, showing that the pace of development in China ranks among the fastest in the world.
Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, three other major domestic cities, ranked 59, 71 and 120, respectively.
The competitiveness survey ranked New York, London and Tokyo as the top three cities, followed by Paris, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Singapore, Seoul and Hong Kong.
Professor Ni Pengfei of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences led the survey with his US counterpart, Professor Peter Carl Kresl of Bucknell University.
According to Ni, traditional top-level cities like New York, London, Tokyo and Paris continue to expand their global impact, but face challenges from rising stars in China, Mexico, India and Brazil.
Asia has great potential and Chinese cities are showing the fastest economic growth, the Chinese professor added.
