City scared by poisoned food drama

A man was punished with a 10-day administrative detention for leaving a bag of rat poison-mixed chicken tails in a supermarket after that bag of chicken tails, a delicacy in China, was bought unknowingly by a customer.

The 27-year-old man surnamed Liu was hired by the Beishan Supermarket in Dazhou City, Sichuan Province to prepare poisoned bait for stray cats that ran amuck on the premises at night.

After blending rat poison with chicken tails on Sunday evening, Liu placed the bag on a counter carelessly and went to a supermarket office. Shortly afterwards, a customer put it in her basket and went to the cashier around 9:30pm, Southern Metropolis Daily reported today.

After receiving a report from the supermarket, the city government sent out 2.9 million phone messages to local residents to warn them of the poisoned chicken tails and flashed the warning on TV screens.

The customer responded and fortunately he hadn't eaten the chicken tails. Local authorities also sued the supermarket yesterday and launched a food safety campaign in the city, the paper said.
