City-bound flight returns to Australia to get child medical care

A China Eastern Airlines flight heading for Shanghai returned to Australia this morning in order to help a child whose finger was badly fractured, according to a passenger on board.

The passenger, named Xu Yangdong, said on his Sina microblog that the incident took place about one hour after the MU738 flight took off from Melbourne this morning.

He described the child as in serious condition after the finger injury, the cause of which was not mentioned. The crew decided the plane should return in order to get the child timely medical care.

Xu said the 300-plus passengers were all calm and supportive of the decision.

The plane landed at 11:50am and the child and his or her relative were escorted off the plane by the crew, the passenger said.
