Civil plane hit by pigeon flock in Xinjiang
A Boeing 757 plane heading to Nanjing City from Urumqi in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region was forced to return to an airport minutes after taking off yesterday as a flock of pigeons struck the aircraft, the Iyaxin.com reported today.
When the plane took off at 10:44am yesterday from Urumqi International Airport, it was hit by a flock of pigeons flying across the runway, which forced the plane to return to the ground, according to the website, a major news portal in Xinjiang.
The plane landed at 11:10am and later checks found part of the plane had been damaged. The airline switched passengers to another flight, the report said.
Airport security officials said they found the remains of 10 pigeons on the runway during inspections after receiving the report.
It's the worst case of birds hitting planes recorded so far this year at the airport, according to the website report. Initial investigations showed the birds were carrier pigeons raised by a local resident.
