Civil servants in land scam probe

More than 200 civil servants are being investigated for illegally transferring their residence permits from urban to rural areas of eastern China's Zhejiang Province to win compensation allocated exclusively for relocated peasants.

Officials in Yiwu city have ordered these "farmer civil servants" to immediately change their hukou, the Chinese household registration, to their work place or they will be fired, Xinhua news agency reported today.

Citizens with a rural hukou are entitled to 108-square-meter lands to build a four-storey house valued about two million yuan (US$295,420).

Besides, the holder also becomes a shareholder to get an annual bonus after their village community was changed into a limited company, reported Xinhua news agency today.

The government launched the investigation in March after it received many complaints about the "double identity" of civil servants from other residents.

"They are enjoying stable salary and they are using peasants' welfare," said He Guofeng, a Party Secretary of Qingpan Village.

Some civil servants were suspected of taking advantage of their position in transferring hukou, because it is usually hard to change from one area to another.
