Class timetable changed for wedding

THE principal of a rural school in southwest China's Sichuan Province has been suspended from work after sending pupils home so that a teacher's son could get married at the school.

The principal was suspended yesterday, today's West China City Daily reported. The local education authority is investigating.

Hundreds of students at the central school in Daxian County of Sichuan's Dazhou City were sent home on Monday as the school was turned into a wedding reception venue for an unnamed teacher's son.

Kitchens were set up in marquees erected on the school's playground and wedding banquets were served in classrooms.

The day's classes were shifted to Saturday.

The Daxian County Education Commission suspended the principal - who was not named - after receiving complaints from parents.

The commission stressed that schools must schedule classes according to the authority's regulations and are not allowed to change schedules of their own accord.

Schools must apply to the authority to change schedules if necessary in case of accidents, natural disasters or public activities, it said.
