Classes reopen after 8 children slaughtered
CLASSES resumed in a south China primary school today, one day after a knife-wielding man killed eight pupils and injured five in a 55-second spree at the school gate.
The school in Nanping City, Fujian Province was closed after the attack on Tuesday morning. One of the injured students regained consciousness this morning. Four others were still in intensive care unit and their conditions are stable, reported Xinmin Evening News today.
Teachers handed out chrysanthemums at the school gate this morning and more than 2,000 students mourned the lost of their eight friends before the first class.
The alleged killer Zheng Mingsheng was arrested at the scene. He used to be a doctor at a community hospital in Nanping city, according to Huang Zhongping, spokesman for local police.
Zheng was believed to have a long history of mental illness and witnesses said they heard him shouting "they make me crazy, I will kill you all," when he waved knife at 13 students waiting outside the gate before school.
But two nurses used to work with Zheng said he never showed any symptoms of mental disease. One of his patients said Zheng was very kind and gave relatively cheap prescriptions.
"He was quite a sweet guy," said one of Zheng's neighbors quoted by China Youth Daily. "Children living in the community all liked him and he used to buy them snacks."
The 42-year old Zheng lived with his mother and never married. He used to live with a girlfriend four years older than him, but their break-up six months ago broke his heart, the neighbor said.
Zheng lost his job last year and failed to find another. An unnamed college mate said Zheng was fired because he claimed to have an intimate relationship with the boss's wife.
Zheng even threatened to kill leaders of the local health authority because they didn't allow him to open a private clinic, the report said.
