Classic line persuades Monkey King

A QUICK-THINKING firefighter persuaded a naked man claiming to be Monkey King to come down from a bridge by telling him he was the classic character's master.

The man, believed to have mental health problems, had climbed to the top of a bridge in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, on Tuesday morning.

He was spotted wandering around naked, claiming he was the rebellious Monkey King from Chinese classic "Journey to the West."

As he paced up and down on the top of the bridge during rush hour, police closed it and readied air cushions, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

As firefighters edged toward him, the man refused to come down and continued to brag about his supernatural powers.

The deadlock was broken when a quick-witted firefighter told the man he was Xuanzang, the monk who journeyed to India for Buddhist sutras accompanied by Monkey King.

"I am your master and I want you to follow me," the firefighter told him.

On hearing this, the man pressed his palms together and obediently followed the firefighter down from the bridge.

He was then sent to hospital.
