Clear head, good lungs save man from tiger

A VILLAGER in northeast China last week survived a close encounter with a tiger by shouting at it.

Cao Bingguang from Chunhua Town in Hunchun, northeast China’s Jilin Province, was picking plants in a forest with his friend Xiang Laoqi on Thursday. After they split up, Cao heard footsteps nearby. He looked up and saw a tiger less than 20 meters away.

“I was petrified,” he said. “I thought, ‘That’s it. I’m done!’”

He had never seen a tiger in real life before. He said it stood about 80 centimeters tall and had strong-looking legs. It was so near that he could clearly see the stripes on its face.

Terror gripped him, but he remembered something he once heard from the local forestry department: Don’t run from a tiger. Look it straight in the eyes and shout at it ... and hope.

Cao shouted loudly to his friend but got no reply, so started backing away slowly. The tiger stared at him for a few seconds, turned around and disappeared into the trees.

Cao ran for his motorcycle and raced back to Chunhua.

“I fell off several times,” he said.

Back at his village he told police who set off on a search for the beast in the forest. They didn’t spot the tiger, but they did find Xiang safe and sound.

Chunhua is located in Hunchun National Siberian Tiger Nature Reserve close to the border with Russia.
