Climber dies on world's tallest peak
AN amateur Chinese mountain climber died of altitude disease yesterday while descending the world's tallest peak, Mount Qomolangma.
Wu Wenhong, from Jiangsu Province, died around 4am at an altitude of 8,750 meters, said Nyima Tsering, head of the mountaineering team from Tibet Autonomous Region.
Wu, 40, reached the summit about 10am on Monday on his first attempt. "He was walking slowly toward the top," said Nyima Tsering. "At 3pm, a guide told us Wu was too sick to move along."
At least three other climbers stayed with Wu trying to keep him alive. A rescue helicopter could only reach 6,500 meters.
