Closures for V-J Day parade rehearsals

BEIJING will shut down roads and close metro stations for night rehearsals of a September 3 parade to mark the 70th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, according to the police.

The rehearsals will be held from 10:30pm today to 4am tomorrow and during the same period from Saturday night, police said.

Streets surrounding Tian’anmen Square and Chang’an Street, where soldiers will march, will be closed during the rehearsal.

Night parking is also banned on several roads and vehicles can only enter with a permit.

From 11pm until the end of the rehearsals the following day, five metro stations along Chang’an Street — Jianguomen, Dongdan, Wangfujing, Tian’anmen East and Tian’anmen West — will be closed to the public.

Meanwhile, Beijing will replace guardrails on major downtown streets as it prepares for the parade.

Almost 18 kilometers of guardrails will be replaced on Chang’an Street and surrounding areas, said Liu Qiang, deputy Party secretary of state-run Beijing Shougang Machinery & Electric Co Ltd, a company that makes the steel barriers.

Some old guardrails have become rusty and unsightly, while new ones are sturdy and durable, he said.
