Coach starts own probe
AN Olympic diving coach and national competition judge vowed to collect evidence herself to support her accusation that the national diving team manager rigged the competition at the recent National Games.
Ma Yanping, the first coach of Olympic diving champion Xiong Ni, quit her position as a judge at the 11th National Games in Shandong Province in October, initially citing health concerns before claiming Zhou Jihong was rigging the competition. "All the diving championships had been fixed by Zhou," Ma said.
Since then Ma said quite a few senior coaches and athletes had called to express support.
Ma's accusations were supported by another senior judge, who said judges at the 10th National Games in 2005 were instructed before the 10-meter platform competition not to give Olympic champion Tian Liang more than 8.5 out of 10 for his dives. Most gave him 8.5.
