Coach, truck collision claims 32 lives, injures 24

A HEAD-ON collision between a truck and passenger bus in northeastern China yesterday killed at least 32 people and injured another 24.

The accident happened along a section of highway undergoing road maintenance in Liaoning Province's Fuxin City.

The truck was on the wrong side of the road when it crashed into the coach, causing both vehicles to burst into flames, said an official, surnamed Wang, from the provincial transport department.

All three people in the truck died immediately and 29 bus passengers perished.

The remaining 24 injured passengers were hospitalized, with three still in a critical condition.

The accident happened about 3am as the bus headed from Tianjin City near Beijing to Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang Province.

The truck, with an Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region registration plate, turned the wrong way when it came out of a service area, according to Wang.

Zhang Zhijing, deputy director of the Zhangwu County People's Hospital, said the institution received 25 injured people.

One of four severely injured people later died in the hospital.

Maintenance work was being carried out on the section of the four-lane expressway linking Tieling and Chaoyang cities in Liaoning where the accident happened.

The expressway was cleared and normal traffic resumed.

Zhang said all patients were in a stable condition apart from the three critical cases, who were being transferred to the provincial capital of Shenyang and Fuxin for further treatment.

Zhang Xueliang, a survivor being treated in the hospital, said: "We were all sleeping when the accident happened."

Some people crawled out of the bus after the collision, and "a fire broke out not long after I left."

Another victim, Li Shucai, said people called emergency numbers when they got out of the bus.

Ambulances, firefighters, and police cars soon arrived but there were still a lot who failed to escape the fire, Li said.

All recovered bodies were sent to the funeral house in Zhangwu.

Identities of the deceased victims were hard to confirm, as they were severely burned along with their ID cards or other identity information, a police spokesman said.

The only two victims who could be identified were the drivers of the two vehicles, he said.
