Coal theft workers lured with drugs
DRUG users in south China’s Guangdong Province formed an illegal business stealing coal, giving their workers drugs to keep them digging, police said yesterday.
Officers said the ringleader, a 36-year-old surnamed Tan, was a local tough from Matang Village who fellow villagers were afraid to cross.
Police said he started taking drugs in 2010. Two years later, to fund his habit, Tan gathered out-of-towners to steal coal from a nearby heap of mining waste material.
To avoid being discovered by land resources officials they used simple tools and worked at night, Tan reportedly said.
Tan befriended a number of drug users and to support their habits four of the group, led by Tan, expanded their illegal business, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.
Soon Tan recruited some 10 people who were given drugs and set to work collecting coal.
Working from midnight to 7am, they would gather at Tan’s home beforehand where he would dispense the drugs.
Usually at around 4am, the workers would be given more drugs to ensure they kept working.
The report did not say what type of drugs the group was taking.
Having noticed the midnight gatherings at Tan’s home, police started an investigation two months ago.
Police in Renhua County said on Monday that in recent raids they had held 15 drug takers and seized guns and drugs.
