Coca-Cola rejects man with 100,000 winning bottle caps
A man in the southwestern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was rejected by a Coca-Cola subsidiary when he tried to claim lottery prizes with more than 100,000 bottle caps printed with "Get a 330ml Coke free," which he collected through trash recycling.
The man surnamed He, a resident of Nanning City, told the media that the Coca-Cola (Guangxi) Beverages Co Ltd used to advertise that people can win a free bottle of Coke with a cap printed "Get a 330ml Coke free," Xinhua news agency reported today.
He said he spent about 120,000 yuan (US$18,927) to hire workers to recycle empty bottles and collect caps with the winning code and he has accumulated more than 100,000 such caps.
He said it was not the first time he collected lottery-winning caps. Previously he just called the company and the company would send workers to take the caps and bring him the drinks.
However, He was rejected by Coca-Cola this time as the company said the cap lottery was a sales promotion to encourage consumers, but the man was not a normal consumer.
He said he had called the company more than 100 times since early July but the company rejected his request with different excuses. Now the prize claiming deadline has passed.
Zhao Mingtang, a lawyer in Nanning, said that as long as He can prove that he collected the caps legally and these caps are real, the company has no reason to deny him the awards.
Zhao added that if the man can prove that he called the company for awards before the deadline, the company should be held responsible for defaulting on prize payment.
