Collector finds the names of fame

DID you know that there are people with Kill, Death, and Ghost as their surnames? A retired man in Jiangxi Province says he will apply to Guinness World Records for collecting more than 2,000 of the weirdest family names in China.

The 75-year-old Cheng Yinglian said he was driven to collect unusual family names 20 years ago when he read a newspaper byline starting with Gui, meaning Ghost, reported today's Jiangnan City Daily.

Cheng said he found the surnames all had stories behind them and soon became obsessed with the search, combing old books for unusual names.

Cheng has published a book titled "Thousands of Surnames" detailing the names he's collected over the years.

Surnames encompass numbers (from zero to zillion), daily necessities (tea, oil, salt, and vinegar), or time units (seconds, minute, hour).

Other unfortunate people have inherited surnames such as Yao, meaning drugs, Zai, meaning kill, or Si, meaning death.
