College freshmen in the mood for love, survey says

Romance, not studying, is on the minds of university freshmen.

Nearly 80 percent of freshmen starting college this September said they want to find a boyfriend or girlfriend during university, a renren.com survey found.

The survey interviewed 2,557 freshmen — 46 percent male and 54 percent female.

Most students said attraction in the biggest reason for romance, others said it is a spiritual demand while nearly 10 percent said being single is shameful since so many of their friends already have boyfriends or girlfriends, the survey found.

Apart from character and similar interests, 41.6 percent of male students said appearance is a key factor in choosing a girlfriend. Ability is a major factor when female students choose a boyfriend, the survey found.

About 32.5 percent of males believe living together or having premarital sex is fine while 58.1 percent said they don’t support or oppose either. Only 5.6 percent of female students support living together or premarital sex while 54.1 percent neither support nor oppose them, according to the survey.

The survey said 9.4 percent of male students were opposed to both while 40.3 percent of female students felt the same way.

The survey also asked students about transportation, living costs and their plans for university.
